Choosing an AFM head
Harvester head questions
Practical answers for choosing, installing and operating the right AFM head for your machine and working conditions.
How do I choose the right harvester head for my base machine?
Start with the carrier type and operating weight, then check the head weight, available hydraulic pressure and oil flow, crane capacity, typical tree size and intended work. AFM and its dealers can recommend a suitable head–base-machine combination and help plan the installation. Compare the AFM product range or ask for installation support.
What tree diameter should the harvester head be selected for?
Choose primarily according to the diameter of the timber you process most often, not only the largest tree the head can cut. The optimum tree-diameter range is a better guide to everyday productivity, while saw-bar length and maximum cutting diameter show the upper capacity. These values are listed in the product technical data.
Can an AFM harvester head be installed on an excavator?
Yes. Selected AFM heads are designed for excavators and other tracked base machines. Compatibility depends on machine weight, hydraulics, boom or crane capacity and the installation. AFM can recommend combinations and prepare an installation design, while the dealer can carry out required modifications. Read more about AFM heads on excavators.
What is the difference between a harvester head and a felling head?
A harvester head is intended to fell, feed, delimb, measure and cut stems into assortments. A felling head focuses on controlled felling and handling when full stem processing is not required. Compare harvester heads and felling heads by application.
Can I keep my existing measuring system?
Often yes. AFM offers measuring and control systems tailored for AFM heads, and a head can also be equipped to work with another manufacturer’s system when the existing setup meets the requirements. Final compatibility should be confirmed for the specific head and base machine. See the measuring-system options.
How are service, spare parts and operator training handled?
The AFM dealer network supports customers from model selection and installation through operator training, maintenance and spare parts. Local parts availability helps minimize downtime, and training covers operation, adjustments and routine maintenance. Learn more about service and support or find your nearest AFM sales contact.
What information should I include in a request for a recommendation or quote?
Include the base-machine make, model, year and operating weight; boom or crane details; available hydraulic pressure and oil flow; current control or measuring system; typical and maximum tree diameter; main work type and species; and the country or operating area. This helps AFM identify a suitable head, equipment and installation plan faster. Send the details through AFM contacts.
